A Gendros man who last night ‘cooked’ a dinner of frozen battered fish, frozen oven chips and Heinz baked beans plated it up like he was Michel Roux Jr.

Production Operative Pete Bowen, 39, unusually offered to make the family’s evening meal last night having ‘come across all creative’.

Bowen said: “I’m actually a complete novice in the kitchen. Seriously.

“My wife offered to make some thing which had courgette in it so she was quite clearly struggling for ideas and as a modern man, I stepped up.”

Pete’s wife Theresa said: “When Pete said he’d ‘take care’ of dinner I was delighted, especially when he described it as white fish, potatoes with a tomato and cannellini inspired side dish.”

Bowen added: “According to the box the fish and the chips took 30 minutes to heat up, so I was in the kitchen for two and a half hours all in all and I used all the cutlery.

“I sat on the floor watching the food cook, opening the oven door every 10 minutes to make sure it was working, then chucked the beans into a smoking hot pan.

“I plated it all up in order like on Masterchef. Fish lined up in the same angle, all with matching fork stab holes in the middle so I could check it was hot. Exactly 13 chips each plate and I put the edible beans in an egg cup on the side.


Pete’s son Frankie said: “It was an emotional evening, Dad was in a foul mood and none of us were allowed in the kitchen while he cooked. Although he did manage to drink eight beers somehow so was quite positive when he served it up.

“The line of tomato sauce across the plates was a nice touch and it was going quite well until Mum broke a tooth on a burnt oven chip.”
